"Yes, of course. I need to just keep my spirit up and keep doing what I am doing." I say and smile down at my shrimp. I twirl linguini on my fork and take another bite.
"Good things always happen to those who work hard and persist." I go on.
"I think you are nicer looking than your cousin as well." I say to add to the earlier conversation.

"Yes, and thank you. Mind you he's no scruffy idiot, but still thanks." I take a bite of my food and have a sip of wine. "I try to do the best I can in my job, to get the most for all of my clients, and to be fair to the other side of the deal. That's all negotiating is. I guess it's the same in politics."

"Yes, I see the similarity." I finish up my food, and although I wouldn't gain weight from it, decide that desert would be tacky.
"Other socialists don't really respect me. They think I am a sell out to capitalism." I say. I don't feel like I am, but I suppose I may seem like one.
"I will tell you honestly that I could never be a revolutionary socialist. I could never live the life of an activist. I like having a nice home. I like having stability. I like nice things. I like all these things within moderation. I am not a zealot."
"I have worked for what I have, and am proud of it. I feel empowered by it. I am not radical I suppose. I would never be able to shout in protest or live that kind of life."
"Maybe I am materialistic myself."

"We're all materialistic to a point. We use our posessions to help define ourselves in the world. There's nothing wrong with this, unless objects become more important to us than people. I know what it's like to work all my life for what I have, and I won't give it up just because someone else says so. They have no right to do that. If people want to pool their resources that's good and all, but it has to be an individual decision." I also finish my food, and when she skips dessert I decide to do the same.

"That was nice. Would you like to go for a drive around the city?" I ask, I do like his car, and in many ways I am like that horrible stereotype of a woman. I am attracted to men with power and money. I don't mean to be. I certainly would not pass up on someone who is kind but penniless, but I do have these terrible inclinations towards status.
"I suppose you do get a lot of women interested in you because you are well off."

"Well yes and no. I don't flaunt my status to attract women if that's what you mean, but sometimes it just happens. The only women I was ever serious with were attracted to me because of my personality, not my wealth." We climb into my car. "Well it might not sound like it, but I think the elevated highways have good scenery, at least at night. When the whole city is lit up I think it is very impressive."

"Yes, that sounds just fine." I say buckling up.
"And what happened to those that you were serious with? Just not ready for commitment? I ask.
"I'm sorry, I sound nosey. I feel terrible asking so many questions and making assumptions. I am really not a rude person nor am I as materialistic as I sound. I have just been in a funk I suppose."

"No, you're right. I guess I'm just not ready for anything long-term..." If it was light out she'd be able to see me blush. "It's nothing against them. Not at all..."

We drive off and the city really is impressive at night. It is so vast. And there is something primal about night and light, like perhaps, hundreds of years ago, the scene could have been similar, but the light of torches or lanterns instead. I smile out at it.
"Maybe you can find a good spot to stop so we can look out at the city." I suggest.

Antero is feeling a little spontaneous, so as Nea is sitting beside him looking at the puzzle, he kisses her on the cheek. He is not sure why he felt compelled to do that, but goes along with the impulse.

"Well, I kind of used to be a socialist." Brandon admits to Hailey. He cracks his eyes open a little. "Do you know much about socialism?"

"I was a socialist for a few years, but now I am a nihilist. Have you heard about nihilism, or should I explain it to you?" He asks.

"A nihilist is someone who doesn't believe in anything. Well, or doesn't believe that there is any truth in this universe. There is no God, and we are pretty much just complex animals who happened to invent a lot of beliefs, values, and codes of conduct." He explains.
