"I like lemon bars. They remind me of Zivon. Zivon is a lemony person, but I still like him well enough."
I notice that she is looking in the bowl.
"Don't worry, there will be enough bars for all of us. I hope you like lemon bars, but they are my favorite."
"That's a cool outfit. The jeans and dress thing is pretty cool. You can have the dress. It's pretty old. I wore it to a winter dance once back in high school."

Lilia yawns and goes to the refridgerator and pours herself a tall glass of milk. She sits down at the table and smiles to herself. "This dress was from my mother. She sent it to me when she found out I was getting married. I wish I knew where she was. I wish the agency could have helped me. But I am glad she still is watching me from somewhere like my angel. She is my mysterious angel."

"I wish I could speak Russian, but it is nice talking to you. You are a good listener, but seem a bit sad. I hope that someday I understand you."
"I wonder where Shura has been. I bet you are excited to see him after all this time."
"Even though Salome doesn't believe you, I believe you. You just seem so genuine."

"I had a friend who died last year of a disease. She looked a lot like you. She fell sick and died. No one knew about it until a few days later when the landlord came to collect rent. I wish she was around to see me. People live and die in this city and no one seems to notice it. What a cruel world, isn't it? Sometimes I wonder if that could be me. To die alone in my apartment this winter with no one to take care of me or care. That is why I came here." Lilia says in a rare moment of clarity. However, since she is speaking in Russian, no one will understand her words. Her eyes become teary and she touches her heart with her small, pale hand. "Who cares for me anymore? Who cares for me?" She sobs.

I don't know what I said, but she starts rambling in Russian and then starts crying.
I don't know what to do, so I just walk over to her and give her a hug. I rub her back and hold her tight.
"Shhh, don't cry, don't cry Lilia. We're here for you. Don't cry...shhh..." I say to console her.

I return home after another work meeting and go to the kitchen for some ice water. I am mildly annoyed that Lilia is here, but do not feel threatened by her since I give no credence to her lies.
"Oh, Lilia is still here. We really ought to do something about this poor creature. "
"We should try to find a home for her before Shura returns."

Lilia stops sobbing and turns to Salome. Although she has no idea who Salome is, she doesn't like Salome. She sees her as somekind of threat and someone to watch carefully. She looks at Salome with quiet and watchful eyes. She turns back to Helvi and smiles. "Yes, you remind me of that friend of mine. But that woman reminds me of the women at the orphanage. The ones that looked after us and made us follow the rules. They were stern and cold to us." Lilia says to Helvi.

"Hey Salome. Good to see you again. I am making lemon bars." I say with a bright smile. I get up and return to my lemon bar project, pouring the batter into a large silver dish.
"I really believe Lilia. She is a nice girl. I don't think she is trying to take advantage of Shura. I hope she can stay here."

"Don't be silly, Helvi. It is obvious that she is lying. Please...I know Shura better than that. This girl is a mentally confused little creature who wandered into our home by accident. I will hear nothing of it." I say and get my ice water.
I sit down at the table across from Lilia, but feel stressed from work. I try to smile at her, but really just want her to leave.

As I walk I see Helvi talking to two other women, so I decide to walk up. "Good morning." I say to them as I walk up.

"Henna, do you speak Russian? This girl Lilia only speaks Russian, so Salome and I can't speak with her. She says she is Shura's wife, but Salome doesn't believe her."
"I don't know what to think. I just wish that I could speak Russian so I could understand her."

"I wish I knew what happened to our son. He was with me and then when I went to the hospital he disappeared. Maybe Shura knows." Lilia says in Russian and becomes dreamy again. She turns away from Salome and turns to Henna. She stares at Henna with glossed over eyes, then smiles to herself and starts laughing in a childish way.

After getting my car fixed, I finally managed to get back to the house. I see Salome and Helvi around someone on the couch.
"Hey, sorry, my car died, and I had to spend the ni-" I notice who's on the couch and drop my laptop case onto the floor. I run over to Salome and grab her arm, then pull her outside, leaning on the door behind us.
"Ahh... Why is she here..?" I ask, my heart pounding.

"What? Why is she here? Why? Do you know her? Well?" I ask him sternly and become quite upset. I take a deep breath and try not to be angry.
"It is nothing Shura. Don't worry about it. She just claims to know you. She is just a bother. She is clearly mentally disturbed. She has been telling everyone lies about you. But I would rather not talk about the sorts of things she has said."

I smile at Lilia, not wanting to judge her just yet. "Yes I speak Russian, and Salone, you shouldn't be so judgemental. At least let her make her case."
