"Okay." I say as we drive along. I take an offramp that leads up a hill, with no houses or streetlights around, and then pull over and park. "Is this good?" I ask.

We stop and I stare down at the city. It is huge and flat, and the light of homes and apartments is divided only by a winding river that flows through the city. I admire the view and feel content.
And there are millions of people, probably going to sleep, living their lives in different ways, alone from one another, but so close at the same time.
"I think to be human is to be alone. No one carries our thoughts and memories but us. We each walk our private path towards our end. Paths cross, but the people you meet, can never fully know where you have been." I say with poetic sadness.

"I'll have a grape soda." He says, feeling a little like grape for some reason. He isn't sure why that is. "Yeah, so we believe in nothing. We believe that all beliefs are lies."

"Well I guess that's one way to look at it... I try not to be overly sentimental. Sure it's enlightening, but it can also be depressing." I also gaze out at the city, but I see a different picture. I see the happiness and success of the human race, but I do keep a somewhat foolishly optimistic view of things.

"Man this grape soda is like the best soda I've had in my life. You rich people have it made." Brandon says as he drinks his soda.

I feel then a chill wind.( We'll say that the car is a convertable.) I do think too much. Not everything around me is an omen. I do not feel cold, but I feel, maybe cold inside. I rub my shoulders.
"And what do you think will happen in the future?"

"Well with any luck and just a little effort we'll all get ourselves back on track and make the most of this situation... If not, well it won't be good..."

I decide that it is depressing talking about the future. I do not wish to be burdoned by fear of it. I want to live more for what is going on now and make the most of this situation. I have to forget, move on, something. I stare out blankly, but take his hand.

"I don't have a girlfriend. I have a girl that I like. Her name is Linnea. But I don't think anything will happen with that. Not right now anyway." He says. He is a little sad when he says this.

I take her hand in mine and hold it gently, and remain silent to enjoy the moment. I stare out on the city, but my thoughts aren't there anymore...
