"Then don't talk about it. Surely things have been going good for you, why don't you tell me about the good parts." I suggest.

"The good things are too numerous that I don't know where to begin." Bassarov says with a smile. "Meeting new friends, learning more about politics, traveling. These are all good things." He replies. He looks at her with admiration. "And what about you?"

"Well as I said I've got my own class now, which is nice because now I don't need to teach someone else's material. The University even lets me teach Marxist theory in class. It's great. You really should study more and get an academic job." I say.

"I will I will, I've just been a little busy. Anyway, I need more experiences." He replies. "In time." "You must keep rather busy then, working so much at the university and taking care of your son."

"It's not so horrible as you might imagine. Now that Buster's old enough to know when to keep quiet I can bring him to school most days. He likes to read. Imagine that, a kid that likes reading..."

"Must be pretty smart then." Bassarov says.
"Would you like to meet some of my other friends. I left them on a bad note. They are Rei and Mischa. They are in this counter terrorism group. Not exactly the people I typically would hang out with, but they might at some point be useful to me."

"Counter terrorists eh? That could prove to be interesting. Who exactly do they work for?"

"It is an international team, but I understand this is spearheaded by the United States. I really don't know the details. It never interested me very much. As for Rei, I am suspicious of her and don't care for her much at all, but, she might be useful, and since I think she assassinated the Venezuelan president, I want to stay on her good side."
"My goal is to get her to confess to that. I am positively obsessed with that. But in order to do that, I must build her trust." Bassarov explains.
"I don't know why I am telling you this. I must seem awfully low to use someone. But, I want answers."

"Well if you ask me you should be asking why she did it, rather than if. What would she stand to gain? United Marxists are far less dangerous than indipendant marxists, at least from the standpoint of terrorisim. But if you're right this could prove interesting, I've never met an international assassin before."

Bassarov feels a little sick to his stomach again thinking about what happened in Venezuela. He had been there and was quite distaught over it all. He felt like things had been rolled back and it could take months to regain ground. At it was all the fault of that loathesome woman. No, it was not really all her fault, but he liked to put the fault on something. She was his scapegoat at the moment, but he would never let Rei know this. "Let's just go." He says in a much more serious tone. The two head out and he says very little along the way.

I am surprised at Bassarov's sudden change in demeanor, since he is usually so jovial along with his seriousness. I follow along until we get to the airport. "So they're staying on a plane? Which one?" I say, eyeballing the various Learjets and Beechcraft lined up on the tarmac."

"I think it was some converted 747, I don't remember." Bassarov says, scratching his head. He figures he really should pay more attention to these things. He wonders if he is even allowed out there with the planes and worries that he might get into some kind of trouble. But, they eventually find the plane and all is well. "Sorry that I am not as cheerful as usual. I've had a lot happen in the past few months."

"Well it sounds like it. I hadn't realized that you were in Venezuela... But this... " I look up at the plane. "They're really serious, aren't they?"

"Yes they are." He replies angrily. He doesn't even know why he bothered coming there. And for the first time he feels that he is not so much younger than his teacher. He feels like she is now the naive one. Not that he has experienced so much, but while she was teaching and researching, he was abroad and in danger. And after it all, he feels himself naive and foolish for having gone.

"I see his attitude sour even more. "Oh what's wrong? Why don't we just go visit your 'friends' and when we're done we can just spend a little time together." I wink suggestively. "You need to relax."
