"Mel Brooks' The Producers alright," he asked, holding up the DVD. "It's a musical... can't get much more up-beat than that."

"It's a laugh riot," he says, setting his notebook on the table and putting the DVD in the disk drive. The opening screen came up, Freak Boy hit play, then sat down next to Zero to watch it.

I grab a can of spam and a spoon while the previews play, and then sit back down. I'd rather not sit so close to someone else, but since he doesn't have a TV... "Well I hope you're right. I need to laugh..."

"The lead actor in the movie--his name is Zero too," Freak Boy says, when Zero Mostel walks on screen.
A while into the movie we get to the plot point, revealed in song via "We Can Do It!" Gene Wilder does a good job as Leo. The song is great.

"that's odd... I always called myself Zero because I have no real name." I say. I keep watching the movie, finding parts of it vastly amusing, and other parts not so funny...

Freak Boy laughs out loud during the musical number, "Keep it Gay."
No matter what you do on the stage Keep it light, keep it bright, keep it gay. Whether it's murder, mayhem or rage, Don't complain--it's a pain, keep it gay!
People want laughter when they see a show The last thing they're after is a litany of woe.
Then once they raise the money comes hiring the actors... the guy auditioning for the part of Hitler in "Springtime for Hitler" is also vastly amusing to Freak Boy. Since Zero is a fascist he's not sure how she feels about Springtime for Hitler, but he notices she seems to be laughing at some parts.

I find the whole Springtime for Hitler bit very funny. I know it's a common misconception that fascists and nazis are the same thing, and I am most certainly not a nazi. "This whole bit is fucking hilarious!" I say when the actual play starts.

Freak Boy loves the music, but loves even more the looks of shock and appaul on the audience member's faces.
Germany was having trouble, what a sad, sad story. Needed a new leader to restore its former glory. Where oh where was he? Where could that man be? We looked around, and then we found, the man for you and me!
And now it's...
Springtime for Hitler and Germany. Deutzchland is happy and gay.
We're marching to a faster pace. Look out, here comes the master race!
Springtime for Hitler and Germany. Winter for Poland and France. Springtime for Hitler and Germany... Come on Germans... go into... your dance.
(dance break)
Springtime for Hitler and Germany! Goose-step's the new step today! Bomb's falling from the skies again! Deutzchland is on the rise again!
Springtime for Hitler and Germany! U-Boats are sailing once more! Springtime for Hitler and Germany... Means that soon we'll be going We've got to be going You know we'll... be going... to war!
That part always makes Freak Boy laugh. And then... the biggest shocker of all... the play is an instant smash hit on broadway.
"No way out... no way out," Gene Wilder says as Zero Mostel reads the 5 star reviews for the play.

"What a couple of idiots!" I comment with a huge grin as I watch them get the reviews.

Freak Boy nods. "That about sums it up."
Then comes the song "Where Did We Go Right" which has a few funny lines, but all in all wasn't as laugh out loud funny as "Springtime for Hitler" or "Keep it Gay"
Some of the better lines include:
The play was lousy and long we did everything wrong Where did we go right?
We searched broadway on and off for singers with a cough
our leading man was so gay, he nearly flew away where did we go right?
We knew we couldn't lose Half the audience were Jews It's the end of our careers! It'll run for 50 years! tell us where did we go right?!
And then comes the plan to blow up the theatre and end the production so they could walk off with their 2 million dollars.

I laugh about as loud as I ever have when they manage to blow themselves up in addition to the theater. "That's great! What a couple of morons!"

After blowing the theatre up, the Producers are arrested. Leo gets out on Bail, but Max is stuck in prison to recieve a letter from Ulla and Leo, who went off to Rio together... then comes the song, Betrayed!
Just like Julius Caesar was betrayed by Brutus! Who'd think an accountant would turn out to be my Judas?! I'm so dismayed... Did I mention I'm betrayed?!
Then comes the attempt to set up another flop play, starring the prison convicts.
This part too always makes FB laugh.

I laugh at this too, and when it's all over say "That was a good choice... What else do you have?" I am starting to feel more comfortable with Freak Boy already, although I am not attracted to him. He's more like a long lost brother.

"I needed that laugh... Glad you liked the movie. Mel Brooks was a comic genius," Freak Boy said. He and Zero never really hit it off before. No particular reason, they just never made an effort. She used to kind of creep him out as well... very stiff and rigid person most of the time. He was now beginning to feel slightly more at ease around her.
"Let's see, what other comedy to I have... Monty Python films are cool. I have 'Life of Brian' and 'The Holy Grail'," he said, holding up the DVDs.
