Overview
The world in this rpg is much like today. People work and go to school, some are rich, some are poor, and the problems are pretty much the same: poverty, war, terrorism, disease, global warming, environmental problems, crime, and so on. Though, in this world, the problems are a little worse than in our own, since this is supposed to take place in a vague, but near future. But for the most part, life is normal. Humans believe many things about the supernatural, but, there is no "proof" about such things. So, a person may believe in vampires, angels, demons, or any number of Gods, however, there is no concrete proof of their existence. The world then is very much like today then. So, if you met a person in YOA who claimed to be a vampire, demon, or angel, most people would think this person is mentally ill or joking, depending on their culture, education, and faith.
However, in this game, there are some supernatural elements. Here is how they fit in. This is just a short summary of a much larger history to the world of Red Infinity and Years of Anguish.
Long ago, many races lived on Earth, sharing the world. Elves, gnomes, dwarves, dragons, humans, spirits, and the many other races of fantasy lived on Earth. However, there was a large conflict between the Gods, but also the races of Earth. I will not go into discussing who was involved or the nature of this war, but the result was that all of the "fantasy" races, were effectively either exiled from Earth, or killed. All that remained then were the humans. Now, some survived this, but mostly only by hiding out in remote areas, or joining human society. Over time, memory of these other inhabitants of Earth faded for most humans, but survived in myth and folk lore. Thus, most humans do not believe in elves, vampires, nature spirits, etc. Although some of these fantasy races survive in certain cultures and religions. Overall though, in the modern world, these races and beings are often seen as nonsense.
Despite the fact that the majority of humans do not believe in these races, or at least in most of them, they exist in secret. Thus, that is how they fit into the world. They live their lives trying to pass themselves off as humans or trying to avoid human society entirely. They live normal lives, refrain from using powers, and many of them come from broken cultures. So, unlike the Lord of the Rings where there is a vast elven culture with religion, langauge, customs, and traditions, elves in this rpg, are misfits, many of which do not remember their own langauge, culture, or ways. The are more likely to know English or French than any elven tongue. And instead of being clerics, warriors, or mages, they are often diplomats, translators, pizza delivery boys, or postal workers. The fantasy then, is not really all that fantastic, but actually quite mundane.
