Staying in a hostel is not the most fantastic thing in the universe, but, Bassarov doesn't complain. He goes to sleep in the small bed, and finds that the room is actually pleasant, except for the occaisional mouse that scurries across the floor. He has been traveling so much that he doesn't really care where he sleeps at this point. He wonders what happened to Alejos and Nith and if they will be joining them afterall.

I really don't have a lot. Just a few books and three outfits, plus my small collection of cosmetics and toiletries. "Hey, thanks Cambridge. I like having you around, and you're a good friend."

At sometime after midnight I recieve an emergency call. For months the Security Council has discussed the threat of terrorism in Syria, a country in which many terrorist groups find sanctuary. We had been paying attention to other Syrian issues, our priority was to urge them to withdraw all troops from Lebanon, since many still remained long after the civil war had come to an end. Terrorism had taken a back seat to some renewed conflict between Syria and Lebanon.
All the while, the Americans had mentioned the possibility of invassion in their global war against terrorism. The Security Council debated and 14 resolutions were passed, the final one an agreement that Syria was not to be invaded and that the threat of terrorism could be dealt with diplomaticly once other issues had been resolved.
Now it seems the Americans are indeed preparing for invassion and that diplomacy has failed. This has come from nowhere. We were all still in the process of discussion. Suddenly they wish to go ahead with something they expressed only passive interest in a month ago?
I get dressed and head out the door, not bothering to pack my things. I spend the next few hours in emergency meetings.

I am over the Atlantic on my way back to Finland when I learn on the news that it is now very likely that the United States will invade Syria within the next 48 hours.
As a member of the Green Party, I am opposed to war and feel shocked that things happened so quickly. I did not expect this at all! But no, I am sure that they will decide against this. The International Community would be against it! They wouldn't stand for it!
I think of Toivo back in the United States and start to worry. I hope he returns to Finland soon. I myself am counting the hours before I land safely.

I turn on the news and there is a special report about Syria. Just a few months ago the administration assured the world that there would be no invassion of Syria, but now, it seems that things have suddenly changed.
I turn to John and Nea.
"I think we should escape all of this madness. Pack your things. We are going to leave today. I want to leave America before the invassion. I am sure my country will not be pleased with things. I'm not sure what we will do."
I am from France and relations with the United States have been strained for years. This will do little to improve things.
France ruled Syria until 1946. It has a special place in our colonialist history, a history I do not, as an anarchist, approve of.

"We must unite and stand up against the fascist disease that is America! The revolution against fascist oppression starts today!" I shout at the dozen or so SLA members in the room. They watch me intently as I rally them.
"The time is now. We are going to take our hostage. We've been sitting on this too long."
I grab a gun and put on a black barret. The others follow suit. Black clad and ready, we leave the compound and pile into our one vehicle, a rusted black van.
We pull away, prepared to start what we've been waiting so long for.

The news is certainly troubling indeed. The word around Parliament is that Syria will soon be invaded by America. This cannot stand. For too long France has taken a weak stance on America's folly, but for no longer.
"My fellow members of Parliament," I say to the assembled woman from behind the podium. "For too long has France stood silent on this issue! We must dissent and we must show America that we will no longer allow them to slaughter the innocents in their foolish and unjust war! If the Americans wish to fight terrorism, they must do so as we all do! On their own soil! They have no right to invade other countries because of suspected terrorist affiliations! We cannot allow innocents to be hurt for the actions of a few!"

"Our first order of business is liberating our brothers and sisters to the south from the vile clutches of America," I say. "Only when the evil puppetteers from across the sea have been eliminated can Korea truly stand united, and only united can we truly defeat the great evil once and for all!"
As I conclude my speech, the cheers are deafening. It should not be long before many terrorist strikes are made against the American presence in South Korea. Once we've weakened them, I know I can march my army in and annex the country with little difficulty.

"This is going to be a hot job! You'll have eight hours when you hit the drop point. After eight hours, the Russian army is going to move in. Your job will be to secure the hostage and get her out before the army starts shotting."
"Who am I looking for?"
"Here, this is her picture."
"Cute." Peter raises an eyebrow, "Is she posing for this shot?"
"She's a model. Aleksandra Khordokovsky."
"The Russian Baron's daughter?"
"Right. She has to be in one piece so be careful."
"Aren't I always?"

Ariel is on her cell phone, in her room. She had carefully checked the room for bugs, and the cell phone has been secured, so no one could listen in. She is sitting on her bed with the television on low volume. A Russian News network is discussing the Syrian invasion.
"Sir, I don't see the purpose of this whole 'stone cold bitch who can't speak Russian' thing. I'm not any closer to getting the files...... yes, I did. No, I'm not sure. The CO is an alchoholic. I think I could probably use that to our advantage."
There is a long pause, as she gets more orders.
"Yes sir. I suppose we will be aiding in the invasion of Syria sir? Yes, it would be beneficial. However, I think the Americans are being a little shortsighted again. With the withdrawal, Lebanon's Hizbollah Party will probably get more active."
There is another long pause.
"Sir, I will also try to get clearance to interrogate the IRA terrorist who was apprehended. I want to question him about the intellegence we intercepted, about IRA members training with some of our own little problems."

"I worry about the rest of our comrades in Syria. I heard that the United States was considering invading. Do you think it will happen?" Malik asks shyly. He is not as knowledgeable as the others and sometimes feels a little out of his league. But he has only been with the group for a few months and that is to be expected. Two men turn to him.
"No, I don't think it will happen. The U.S. has it's hands full right now. They will not invade Syria." A man assures him.
Malik feels better.
"I hope that our comrades join us soon."

A man comes and films Tanya just as the other day Aleksandra was taped. The tape is then released to the media. Both Aleksandra and Tanya have been treated well. They have been fed and have not been beaten. Although they are both in small isolated rooms, they are under constant supervision and their material needs are met. Aslan waits for the Russian reaction to things. This is drawing attention to the rebels once again and their anger over Russian oil interests. But Aslan worries that they will miss the point and storm the compound. He paces around a small gray room watching the news from time to time to keep up to date. He feels uneasy.

Post by Valodya Bassarov on Mar 19, 2005 14:53:28 GMT -5
As soon as Bassarov wakes up, he places another call to back to Russia. It has been two days and there is still no sign of what happened to the party leadership. He expected there to be some international uproar about this. Most of those leaders were not Russian, and here, they were arrested and disappeared.
He remains hopeful that they will be released soon from wherever they are. However, all of this seems very sureal. He never thought something like this would happen, not in this day and age. This is something of the early 1900s. Socialists fleeing Russia to live in exile in more hospitable parts of Europe.
He hangs up the phone with the worry that maybe the leadership will not return. What does this mean for the socialists? They can lead themselves, but most are so young and inexperienced.
