"Yeah. I think Alejos was just inflaming the situation... But what do I know? I really want to learn more about this political stuff. Maybe you can show me sometime."

"Well I am sure you will learn a lot just by all the many things that happens to us." Bassarov replies.
"Alejos had his heart in the right place. The group was just too small to be effective against the police. But at least he tried and this might turn out for the good. I imagine a lot of workers in the city will be pretty upset when they learn what happened."
"This could help us in the long run."

I pick out a formal black dress appropriate for the funeral, then drive directly there. So far it's just family and close friends. I spend the next several hours talking with his family, telling about the friendship we shared and how much I regret not being able to help him more.

"It could backfire too, I mean it could get you the wrong kind of attention. But we can hope for the best." I drag my cigarette again, then drop it on the ground and grind out the butt. Only then do I realize what I was doing, and go beet red. "Uhhh..."

"I thought you smoked but never said anything. Your clothes smelt like smoke, but I thought maybe it was from the clubs and bars we had been to."

"Well, er... I've done so for the last three years... But I was never hooked before you left for Chechnya. I'm trying to quit, but it's hard..."

"I am not sure what to suggest. Maybe you could try that gum or a patch." Bassarov suggests to her. They walk back to the hotel.
"I haven't seen Masha around. I hope she's okay."

"Yeah so do I. She seemed really nice, I wonder where she went?" I ask, deciding that I will stop by the drug store later.

"Oh well, I am sure she'll be back." Bassarov says as they enter the room. He sits down on the bed and rethinks everything that happened today and is happening in the world.

I sit across from Bassarov, and think too. "Want me to call out for food? It might help us think."

"I'm really not hungry." Bassarov replies. He looks at Selja and says nothing more. She is sitting across from him, so he moves over to sit next to her. He grabs the newspaper to read some articals. "Oh, here's more on the nazis." He shows her a picture of Rommel and Eva which is on the front page.

The funeral is a quiet, simple service. I sit with Grey's friends, right beside his family. After the church service, and the service at the cemetary, Grey's mother pulls me aside and talks to me for awhile. I think she thinks I was his girlfriend, and though our relationship was purely plutonic I don't say anything. Eventually she gives me a simple shell necklace that Grey made for her some years ago, and after I thank her I immediately put it on, and decide I will wear it from now on in memory of him...

I look at the article on the Nazis. "How the hell did they get elected? I thought everyone hated them. And is it just me or does that girl look kind of crazy to you?"

"I doubt that she is crazy. From what I understand nazis kill the mentally ill and challenged." Bassarov replies. He folds the paper up and sets it on the bed across from where they are sitting. He puts his hand on her knee and turns and kisses her suddenly. It has been a while since he has done anything like that.

"Mmm, that feels really good..." I say to him. I kiss him back, not sure how far I want to go right now, so I'll let him decide for me.
