Skills:
Diplomacy, Mathematics, Intelligence, Public Speaking
Languages:
Afrikaans, English, Dutch, French, German
Weaknesses:
He isn't overweight, but he is very unfit. This means he cant fight, and if he got into a physical confrontation he would have to back down. He is a secret athiest, but attends church weekly. He believes that if his secret was exposed his position in the AWB would be threatened. He also tends to reject the needs of his family, tending to get carried away with work and politics. He is paranoid about most things.
Appearance:
Isn't exactly fashionable, but he always looks respectable. Always wears at least a shirt and tie when in public. Probably the best way to describe his dress style would be 'business casual'. As for physical appearance, he's just your average Joe. Hair is brown, not yet graying. It's kept short. He combs it over to one side. His eyesight isn't the best, so he has glasses for reading. It is also clear from his face that he is ageing. It has even been said that he looks older than what he is.
Personality:
General calm and reserved, but his strong political opinions means that he sometimes loses his temper. Even though he can get into the debates, he often thinks before he speaks, and argues well.
Although he has extreme views, and is very pationate about them, he isn't hot headed. He will consider doing something, and if he feels it wont achieve enough, he wont do it.
Alot of people would describe him as being cold. It isn't that he doesnt have strong emotions, he just doesn't feel the need to project his emotions to the world. He is reserved in that way, and he wont tell anyone how he is feeling, apart from his family and close friends.
Although there are men in South Africa a lot more racist than Karl, he is prejudiced. He treats blacks, Indians and colored people the way most Afrikaners do, like second class citizens. He blames these 'infidels' for crime, unemployment and the general bad state of national and international affairs.
story:
Born during Apartheid in Pretoria to a middle class Afrikaner family, he had a relatively easy upbringing. However, when he was thirteen his parents were killed by African nationalists. Until then, Karl himself had sympathy for the other races in South Africa. However, the murder of his parents changed all that. He grew a hatred for anything non-white.
He moved to rural Natal, where he spent the rest of his childhood working on his uncle's farm. He got a scholarship in a top Pretoria university, so moved there and studied law and politics. It was during his university years that he realised it was irrational to hate a race because of one act, but he still had that hatred deep inside him.
At twenty two years of age, he married nineteen year old Helen Kuyt, the daughter of a Nationalist Party (pro-Apartheid) official. When she was twenty nine, Helen gave birth to Alex van den Berg (named after Karl's father). Three years later, Emily Van Den Berg was born, and ten years after that, their second son Artur Van Deb Berg was born.
The family lived in the suburbs of Pretoria, enjoying a steady income from Karl's successful law work. However, Karl began to get sidetracked and moved into politics. He joined the Afrikaner Weerstand Beweging, and soon became a leading figure in the organisation. After apartheid, many people saw his law firm as biased, as it would often turn away non-white customers. His company went bust, which meant that Karl had to get a job in another firm.
Until this point, he loved doing his work, because he could work for whoever he liked, whenever he liked. But now he had a boss, and he had people telling him who he had to work for. He didnt like this, and blamed it on the new Post-Apartheid government.
Due to the current problems in the world, the AWB now looks to turn to violence. They have opened a militsry wing, planning sabotage and terrorism, along with assasinations. For this they need arms from abroad. One of the men charged with this task is Karl van den Berg. He is ready for his new life, his new duty. To find weapons, and bring them back to South Africa. But where to begin?
